ASHBURTON LICENSING PETITION.
— i [b? telerhaph — i-kess association.] ASHBURTON, This Day. The enquiry was opened to-day into the petition to upset tlie local option poll, by which no-license was carried. At the commencement of the proceedings' the Magistrate drew attention to the fact that the petition was not signed before a Justice. Mr. Stringer, for the petitioners, admitted that it had not been signed before a Justice. The Magistrate was of opinion that the pecition must be signed before a Justice, and that in consequence of that not being done he had no jurisdiction ; but he would reserve the point, as he did not wish to baulk the enquiry. Mr. Stringer asked tlie Magistrate to rule -Mnefclyßr fche petitioners could call evidence to show that a number of persons entitled to have their names on the roll had been improperly struck off, and the Magistrate decided that he could not go behind the roll. Formal evidence was then called, and on the application of counsel for petitioners the enquiry was adjourned til] sth February.
