The House of Commons, by 228 to 82, agreed to the addition proposed by the Earl of Halsbury to the clause moved by Colonel Kenyon-Slaney, defining more clearly the right of appeal to the Bishops in regard to the character of religious instruction in schools. A vigorous protest from Lord Hugh Cecil (member for Greenwich and son of Lord Salisbury) drew from Mr. Balfour a strong warning of the danger to the church of any driving deeper of the .wedge unhappily separating ecclesiastical opinion and the great body of lay opinion. TJie Bill was then pas«ed by the Commons, and subsequently by the House of Lords.
