GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS.
It was not the best of afternoons yesterday for the annual athletic sports 'of the Girls' High School. As a matter of fact, it was an exceeding^"- disagreeable one. A high wind raged throughout, and towards the end of the programme rain came on and scared most of those onlookers who had ventured tin appearance in summer attire into the schoolroom. The sports themselves were interesting, and proved that girls can enjoy a romp just as much as boys, and compete with, them, too, in mdst of their athletic exercises. The events were got off on the tennis ground within the school enclosure, and the embankment overlooking it servi ed the puipose of a grandstand, where visitors made themselves as co-aifortable =»s possible, watched the games, and listened to the playing of Jupp's Band, which was qu&rlered under the trees. Mr Martin Luckie fulfilled the duties of starter, Mr. Harrison of handicipper, and Messrs. Dolby, Jackson, and Joynt shared the responsibility of judges, while the school staff looked to tha comfort of their visitors, and gave them afternoon tea. An attractive item obout mid.way through the programme ! was provided by pupils of Mr. Harrii soil's gymnastic class, who marched on to the green and performed a series of [ mojss exercises with skill and precision. | The following are the events and their [results: — Threading Needle: M.
