The charge against Richard Post of having attempted to falsely register with the New Zealand Trotting Association a horse named "Major Robin" as "Fancy Free," and also of having forged and used a receipt for £16, was adjourned until Friday nest, owing to pressure of Coyrt business. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. In the Magistrate's Court to-day Michael Burns, charged with breaking and entering the house of Frank Brightling, was committed for trial, bail being allowed. DUNEDIN, 28lh November. The Supreme Court was today hearing a charge against James Murphy, a returned trooper, of stealing two rifles belonging to another trooper. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty. The Dunedin harriers held a ten-mile scratch race to-day, with a view of establishing a record for the colony, and, if possible, for Australia. The conditions were not favourable. H. Murray won by ten yards from T. Bennett in 58min 9 2-ssec. A claim will be made to have it recognised as the New Zealand record. WAIPAWA., This Day. The Hawkes Bay Public Schools Amateur Athletic Association held its first sports meeting here yesterday, in fine weather. The affair was a great success, there being a large attendance of spectators, and eight hundred competitors. R. Saigenson, of Dannevirke, won the Half-mile, the Hundred Yards Championship, and was first in the high jump ; Grant,- of Norsewood, was second in the Half-mile and Hundred Yards Championship, and was second in the long jump. ASHBURTON, This" Day. The body of an old man named Turner, who had been missing from the Old Men's Home for a week, was found in the swimming bath in the Domain this morning. About twelve months ago, Turner attempted to commit suicide in the same place, Bxifc was rescued by the Rev. W. Lamb. Baptist minister. MARTON, This Day. At the Marton Court to-day Joseph Tomperley was committed for trial to the Wanganui Court for attempted wife murder and suicide on 3rd November.
