AUCKLAND, 17th November. The Supreme Court criminal sittings were opened to-day. His Honour, in charging the Grand Jury, said he was sorry to have to state that there was a very large number of cases. The list would have been an unusually large one had not a number of prisoners pleaded guilty in the Lower Court and been •deajt with under the new Act. The following sentences were passed : — James Arthur Hill, for breaking and entering, two years' imprisonment; Chas. Arthur Ganderton, theft, one year; Edward Richard Black, breaking and entering, two years ; Percy E. D. Whittle, attempted false pretences, three yeais.
