OPENING OF THE SEASON. The swimming season was opened at the Te Aro baths on Saturday afternoon by the Wellington Centre of the NeAv Zealand Amateur Swimming Association under rather dcpiessing circuinssfcanees. The north-westerly gale which prevailed made the :-ea veiy rough, and added to this the attendance of spectators Avas small, the Avater dirty, and the sports AA"ere late in starting. A Paremata. fisherman by name Apostle Lambert died suddenly yesterday afternoon while painting a boat. Deceased had been under treatment for angina pectoris, and as a certificate can be given that death w,is due to that complaint no inquest will be held. Information has been received in town that the wooden brigantine Eliza Firth has been dismasted in Queen Charlotte Sound, and is now lying under Long Island. The tug Duco will leave this evening to tow her to Wellington, and she should arrive in the morning. The Arbitration Court safe to-day in connection with the traction and locomotive engine-drivers' dispute. Mr. James Moore, of the Missions to Seamen, and Mr. J. W. M. Harrison, of the School of Physical Culture, have combined to give a gymnastic display and concert in 'aid of the sufferers by the Elingamite, and a successful and substantial benefit should result. The performance is to be given in the Choral Hall on Thursday next. Details of the programme are to be published in a day° or two by the organisers. The Board of Management in connection with the recently-formed Wellington Young Men's Christian. Association have experienced great difficulty in &ecuring suitable rooms in a sufficiently central position, but some weeks since arranged to lease the whole of the top flat and portion of the first floor in the Australian Widows' Fund Life offices, coiner of Willis-street and Lambton-quay, -wherein to make a start. Possession was obtained a day or two since, and the necessary alterations are now in progress in connection with fitting up, etc., for immediate occupation of some of the rooms. We learn that Mr. J. J. Virgo, of Melbourne, travelling V.M.C.A. Secretary for Australasia, is expected to arrive in Wellington vvithin the next few days, on a brief visis to the colony, and lias exI pressed his willingness to assist the newly-established association in any way I he possibly can during his short stay. 1 It is Mr. Virgo's intention to also visit Nelson, Ghriatchurch, and Dunedin, and from his very wide and varied experience in all matters relating to Y.M.C.A.'s, his j counsel and assistance should be very helpful. [ Justices were occupied, for two days at Collingwood in hearing an in-> formation laid by F. 0. Richardson against G. H. Allan, for alleged altering of the county electoral roll. The information was dismissed, with costs. Mr. Allan has instructed his solicitors to take proceedings, alleging malicious prosecution. Mr. Allan has been elected a member of the County Council. Messrs. Harcourfc and Co. will sell by pubtto auction to-morrow, at 2.30 p.m., a seven-roomed house with all modern conveniences, situated in Lawrence-street. This property gives room for the erection of four other houses. A five-roomed villa in Richmond-street, Petone. The house is well buitt, and is let to a good tenant. A property of five acres with three dwellings. • The property is situated on the main Otaki road at Manakau, and is said to be a very desirable property, well let, and in excellent repair. A dairy farm of 4-1 acres situated on the main road to Feilding and only five miles from that place. Tho land, which is in tho best mixed grasses, is well watered, and is subdivided int» six paddocks, all ring fenced. The buildings include a fiveroomed house with all farm outbuildings. Sidey, Meech and Co. advertise that they have reeeiv«d instructions from a gentleman, who is leaving Wellington, to sell at their rooms to-morrow, a lot of usefel furniture, piano, etc. Tho salo will aommenco at 2 p.m. Messrs. Aiken and Co., 42, Lamblonquay, draw attention to cheap boardinghouses and restaurant advertised by them in this issue. A' determined attempt at burglary of a Sydnoy warehouse was defeated by the U9o of a Chubb patent lock, which resisted all efforts to open it. Messrs. W. H. Honey and Co., of Willis-street, ageiits for Chubb's fire-reßisting and burglar proof safes and locks, will supply intending purchasers with price lists and testimonials from those who havo proved their value. Investors a*nd speculators are reminded of an important sale of freehold properties to be hold by Messrs. - J. H.
