PROCEEDINGS REVERSED.
At a London dinner, General A Horace Porter, of the United States Army, was once referred to by the Chairman in 'the following way : "We have here to-night General Horace .Porter, and I call upon him for a speech; the gentleman is like 1 a slot-machine : you' put in a dinner and out comes a speech." The witty general rose, and replied with a quick fire ' of satire: "The Chuirman has thought fit to liken me to a slot-machine; may I re,turn the compliment, and say that he is like one also? Ho puts in a speech, and up comes your dinner."
