THE VENTNOR ENQUIRY. [BY TELEGRAPH.-PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
AUCKLAND, This Day. The Magisterial enquiiy into the recent; wreck of the steamer Ventnor was continued yesterday, before Mr. W. R.Haselden, S.M.,"and Captains Clarke and Fernandez, assessors. The witnesses called were the first and third officers, the second and third engineers, and several members of the crew. Their evidence showed that after the Ventnor struck the reef somewhere off the 'coast of Taranaki, it was decided to make for Auckland, and that the foundering of the vessel was probably due to the bulkhead between the forehold and No. 2 hold giving way, in being considered that the water in the forehold alone was not sufficient to account for the disaster. The officers said they did not see any signs of drinking ou board, but members of the crew made allegations of insobriety on the part of the captain. It was suggested that the steward should be called in regard tc this matter. The enquiry was adjourned till Monday next.
