THE LOSS OF THE VENTNOR.
«, OPENING OF THE ENQUIRY. [BT TELEGRAPH — PBES3 ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, This Day. The Magisterial enquiry into the loss of the steuHiship Ventnor commenced this morning, before Mr. W. R. Haselden, S.M., and Captains Clark and Fernandez, assessors. It was alleged that the cause of the casualty was negligent navigation "by the certificated officers of the ship. In reply to the Bench, Mr. Rose, Collector of Customs, stated that at present there was no charge against Messrs. Cameron and Ure, the surviving officers. ■ Mr. Cameron, chief officer, in reply to questions, said he saw no drinking on board after leaving Wellington, and he had not seen the captain of the Ventnor the worse for liquor. He considered the captain was quite justified in deciding to proceed to Auckland, and did not alter his opinion until near Hokianga.
