FINE WEATHER FOR THE SECOND DAY. (By Telegraph.) (From Our Special Reporters. ) PALMERSTON N., This Day. Just as soon as the gates were closed yesterday the rain cleared off and the sky brightened into a glorious evening, except that a keen westerly wind continued to blow. It is still blowing hard, but fine, with passing clouds, and it looks as if the cattle men, sheep and horse breeders will have favourable conditions for their competitions. There is considerable stir, too, amongst exhibitors of manufactures, the implements and dairy machinery stalls being in full display find machinery in motion. Hundreds of people have come in from the countryBide to see the exhibit of stock, which is a particularly fine one in all departments. 'Hie takings yesterday amounted to £27 16», just a few shillings short of iho first day's receipts last year. Judging began at 9 o'clock with show cattlo .and horses, and dogs wero also put under review. A heavy day's work is before all concerned, as entries in every department are large. Cattle all through make a very fine exhibition. M'Haidy Brothers, of Palmerston, won the championship in Shorthorns with the bull Coiinaught XIX. Lancaster's Rangitumau was champion Jersey bull. Local beasts had the fat cattle competition to themselves - "— lU'Hardy Brothers, of Palmerston, easily securing the trophy for most points with six out of a possible seven, and they took every second prize. Other competitors were Donald Fraser, who secured first, and D. P. Buchanan. f The dairy cows exhibition indicated continued growth of interest and distinct improvement of quantity and quality. Lots of quality was shown in some classes. Prizes were taken by H. Standen, A. Buchanan, and Mrs. Crook. There was a fine show of Hereford cattle, James Stuckey 'taking the championship with bull and his progeny, and champion with the cow Leonora XXII., and reserve champion with a heifer, Amethyst. Levett's Clarence was given a reserve championship in bulls. Some good quality horseflesh is exhibited among five hundred odd representatives in all departments. Championship in thoroughbred stallions went to E. B. Vine's Enchanter, by Bundoora — Miranda, the runner-up being a bay colt by Sou-wester, owned by J. M'Taggart. The champion mare was Donald Fraser's Laurel, dam of the crack racer, Advance, the runner-up being Collins's filly by Sylvia Park. The principal awards in the hackney class fell to J. Devonshire, R. M'Murray, W. Bayne, aad D. Fraser. In the draught section so far judged T. Greenhow showed the prize stallion. Colt prizes were divided amongst J. Black, F. * Bremner, D. M'Lean, while awards for mares fell to Messrs. Douglas and Nathan Brothers. The through train from Wellington brought up a considerable number of visi- , tors from the city and intermediate stations, and the grounds promise to be •fairly full during the afternoon. There is a, fine entry of sheep in all classes. Ellis Brothers' imported South<lo.w£ ram took the championship in. his class, and Stuckey's ewe secured the silver medal. John Raynor was the principal exhibitor in Hampshire Downs. Wellington exhibitors scooped up the chief honours in the collie dog section, J. F. Milk's Poffeke Ariki being, adjudged the best collie dog in the show, ■winning the Association's silver, medal and the New, Zealand Collie Club's gold medal.. Ncill and Rennie's Regina as the best bitch -non similar trophies. The belated export factory Butter returns came to hand this afternoon. The first prize falls to the Kaponga co-opera-tive Dairy Company .with 92 points, second to Ruahine Dairy Company 91£, third Apiti Co-opeiative Company 91. Ine judge, Mr. Kinsella, the Government Dairy Expert, says the exhibits were of uniform quality, with one exception. ft. W. Luxford's Victor was adjudged champion Ayrshhe bull. Stauden's Prin- ! cess May IV. champion cow. Nelson Bros, seemed tue championship «or ram and ewe-inShropshhcs, and Hugh Campbell both reserve championships. There was a fine show of fat sheep, honours going to Thompson Bros, of Palmerston and Nelson Bros, of Hawkes Bay. Rowland, of Lcngburn, woa the champion with Romney Marsh, and Oroy Bros, of Chri&tchurch the reserve champion. The championship in draught stallions was secured by T. Greenhow's Bolingbroke 11., the runner-up being F. Broiler's Commonwealth.
Messrs. Trevor and Sons, builders, are making good progress with the new Stipendiary Magistrate's Court building. The second story has been commenced, and the work, including plastering, should be completed in five months. The brickwork of the main entrance from Lamb-tou-quay, has ~een completed. It is a handsome arch with brick pillars. Wellington harbour was literally teeming with nVh yesterday. The fishermen at Day's Bay landed with their nets fully two tons of warehou and snapper, the'former predominating.' Thi3 morning they made another haul of about half » tc". of the same kinds of. fish.
