THE MANAWATU SHOW.

« REVIEW OF THE PROGRAMME. The seventeenth annual metropolitan show of the Manawatu and West Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Associatioa begins its three-days' season to-morrow on the Association's grounds, Palmcrston, North. Thursday and Friday will bo the popular days, for which special excursions from the city and from all the districts along the West Coast have been arranged for by the Government and the Manawatu Railway Company. There, is every promise that, the great success which attended last year's three-days' show will not only be repeated, but even exceeded. Though to-morrow is Judging Day, the Association has arranged for the entertainment of visitors, the Palmerston Municipal Band having been engaged to play during the afternoon. The Feilding Band is to play on Thuisday, and the Palmerston Brass Band on Friday. Already the accommodation of Palmerston has been engaged for the carnival seaf on, and sleeping-quarters are at a premium. Since last year's show the Association has increased its life membership listr from 48 to 55, and the roll of annual members contains nearly 1300 names. Messrs. J. M. Johnston, W. Rutherford, and J. C. Lane are still Treasurer, Auditor, and Secretary respectively. As in previous years, the best judges available have been secured for the various competitions, and they come from all parts of the colony. For instance, Mr. Thomas Morrin, of Auckland, is to judge the thoroughbred horses, and, with Mr. H. D. Vavasour, of Blenheim, the hunters and the leaping contests. Mr. Vavasour is also to judge the saddle horses and • ponies, Mr. James Macara the harness Lorses, and Mr. Walter Blakie, of Ryal Bush, the draughts. Mr. Robert Meek comes up from Southland and Mr. A. Quertier from Otago*lo judge some classes of cattle, and other classes are to be judged by Mr. W. Taylor, of Te Awamutu, and Mr. A. M'Kenzie, of Featherston. The judges of sheep will be Messrs. C. J. Barribal (Waiuku), James Holms (Waimahaka, Southland), H. Brydone (Bulls), W. Beetham (Maslerton), and T. Marsden (Stoke, Nelson). Mr. A. Clifford Bramah, of Wellington, is to judge collies, and, the other dogs ate to be judged by Messrs. E. De Latour (Wanganui) and R. J. Makin (Koputarua). There are besides competitions for pigs and poultry, and for farmers' produce, grain, fermented drinks, horticulture, home industries, woollen fabrics, and art needlework (Mrs. A. Crawford, of Miramar, judge), Technical School exhibits (Mr. A. D. Riley, of Wellington, judge), and photography. There will be trials for dogs and jumping competitions for horses on each of the three daws of the show. A most interesting exhibition will result aud granted fine neither there should be enormous attendances on Thurs. day and Friday. The Agricultural Department is to b« represented at the show by Mr. C. J. Reakes. One of the special features of this year's show was the Dairy* Farm Com-

petition. The conditions were that competitors mubt be suppliers of milk to uny one of the creameries or factories owned by the dairy companies contributing to the prize fund. The minimum number of cows in the dairy was tfen. The judges — Mr. Kinsella (Government Dairy Expert), Mr. Pveakes (Government Veterinarian-), and a practical daiiyfarmer — paid surprise visits last week to the six dairy farms entered for the competition. The judges' decision was given yebterday, and the result was as follows: — G. F. W. Bottcher, Rongotea, £15, 1 ; Caleb Whitehead, Shannon, £10, 2; W. A. Wil&her, Kelvin Grove, £5, 3 The winner obtained 337 points out of a possible 500. Railway atrangements in connection "with the ahow are advertised to-day.
