A POLICEMAN KILLED.
SUICIDE OF THE MURDERER. [PRESS ASSOCIATION.] SYDNEY, 12th October. The police authorities have been advised from Melbourne that a constable named Johnson was shot dead in attempting to arrest a man, who immediately shot himself dead. The man is believed to be Shaw, who was wanted in connection with the recent murder of Constable Guilfoyle. A constable has left for Melbourne to identify the dead man. DETAILS OF THE OCCURRENCE. A MIDDAY TRAGEDY. (Received October 13, 8.52 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The man who shot Constable Johnson interfered with a little girl wheeling a perambulator at St. Kilda, , a suburb of Melbourne. At the request of onlookers, Johnson went in pursuit on his bicycle, and was shot dead as he approached. The murderer, threatening the witnesses of the tragedy with a, similar fate if they followed, coolly walked away. On two constables tracking him he turned, evidently intending to fire but, changing his mind, blew his own brains out. The tragedy occurred at midday, and caused a great sensation.
