[BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.} TIMARU, 3rd October. Mr. Frank ' H. Smith, of Albury, a sheepfarmer, ' who was defeated at the election in 1896, has announced that he will contest the Timaru seat at the coming election. DUNEDIN, 3rd October. Dr. Gordon Mac Donald has withdrawn liis candidature for the city at the general elections. HOKITnvA, This Day. Rumours are current that Mr. Seddon will be opposed for the Westland seat at the coming election. A returning officer ba? not vet been appointed for Westland. OAMARU, 'I his Day. Mr. A. L. Herdman, a candidate for the Mount Ida seat, addressed the electors at Knrow for a few minutes at the close of an entertainment last night. Pie designated himself an Independent, and pronounced emphatically in opposition to the Government. It is stated that Mr. Cutten, who was announced as a candidate in the Ministerial interest, has acted on the suggesion of his Naseby committee and retired rom the contest in order to avoid spliting votes against Mr. John Ewing, the ected Ministerial candidate I
