WHANGARKI, 17th September. At the Coroner's inquest on the fire at Cnfler's store, the jury returned a verdict that tho store was wilfully set on fire by persons unknown. CHUISTCJ LURCH, 17th September. Mr. Gibbs, Secretary of the Coloninl Mutual Life Society, who is now in Christchurch, states that the funds of the society are not in any way affected by the disappearance of an official who was adjudicated bankrupt in Dunedin yesterday. ' ' A representative meeting of officers of the Railway Service was held at tho Christchurch Railway Station last night, when the following resolution was unanimously passed : — "That this meeting of members of Division I. is of opinion that amplu opportunity lms been afforded to members of the railway service to consider the provisions of the Railway Superannuation Bill, and is quite satisfted with it in it* present form, and trust* the Legislative Council, will pass it this bcssioii." The first conference of delegates from the city of Christchurch tuid tiio boroughs of St. Albuns, Sydenhuin, and Linwood in regard to amalgamating and forming a Greater Ohristchurch, wa« held this evening. Several points dealing with liability for loans and m> forth wero discussed, and the conference was adjourned till figures are supplied by an actuary in regard to the financial position of each body. The Torrey-Alexaiuler mission, which closed to-night,- bad been attended by enormous crowds. There has been a consid<>mblu amount of correspondence j in the local papers as to this mission, including criticism by the Roy. I. Surginson, a Congrogationai minister, of Dr. Torrey's teaching. RUSSELL, This Day. A half-costo named Jack Mountain was drowned yesterday a few miles from Russell, through his boat be.ing twno I over by a sudden squall. The accident was seen by several people, but ho sank just before assistance reached him. The hody has been recovered.
