Just before thb Hous» for dinner yesterday evening the ActingPremier rose and said he desired to make a statement regarding a telegram from Dunedin which appeared in the Evening Post of that date. That telegram i«ad as follows : — "Mr. T. E. Taylor is authority for tho statement that when he was in Melbourne word was received in that city that Mr. Seddon bad r.ttempt«d to float a million loa.n in London, but that the loan was not taken vp n " I should like to state, continued Sir Joseph^ Wflrd, that there is no foundation for'the statement. It is trhollv: and absolutely untrue. Mr. Seddtm he* not attempted to float a loan of * million or any other sum in London. No arrangement has been made for the flotation of any, part ; of the loan authorisei by the House, in London. Mr. Massey — In the colony? Sir Joseph Ward— l am talking abouH London. This statement is absolutely untru<?.' I know everything that haa transpired concerning it and every matter connected with the Treasury sines Mr. Seddon lias been out of the country, and I know eve^-thing in the shape of enquiries made regarding the position of the London money market, and I am stating on behalf of the Government that no arrangements of any kind were mndt by Mr. Seddon for the* flotation of a million loan or any other loan in London, nnd I s?ive the statement an uaqnalificd nnd absolute denial. Mr. Taunor — He does not give th« statement on his own authority. Sir Joseph Ward — I am not saying anything about Mr. Taylor. lam talking about tho Btavcincnt. As a matter ot fact, I know fiom communications I havo hud with Mr. Seddon t&at the very opposite is tho case ; so that such & statement as that is a mere baseless rumour, circulated piqbably, 1 Miould say, by, some people with the object of doing tt» colony harm. Mr. Ttinner— And pnseed on here. Sir J,o«eph Ward — And passed on here* probably by the same peop'e. No instructions have been givon to tue AgentGeneral, cither by the Government or Mr. Seddon. to float a nvlhon loan or *ny other loan.
