RECIPES FOR NOVELISTS.
To the ranh man or woman who would write a novel, Clement Shorter makes tht'se suggestions : "For tiio historical novelist my recipe would probably be : Take two of Sir Walter Scott's novels, two volumes of French memoirs, sprinkle with 'Zounds !' 'Albeit !' and 'By the mass !' to taste, and you have the average historical novel of tho day — English and American. As to tho humorous novel, the recipe is, of coursu : One volume of Fielding, one of Smollett, and all of JJicUcns, brought up to date by modern Cockneyisms. The third, and even more popular fprm of fiction is that which introduces a great deal of preaching of the obvious ; tne writer who host reflects the muddled thoughts of a certain typo of mind will assuredly secure the largest circulation. This implies th,e least 'art' imd the grentest number of readers."
