Lawn Tennis. (BY Huka.)

The premiership of Victoria still drags on, but tho lesults of lust Saturday's matches piactipally titled the respective positions on the premici.-hip list, which the four clubs that have qualified for tho final round will occupy. The M.C.C. stands first, and has two engagements to fulfil which are not likely to imperil their cjaim to first position. Albeit Park has two matches to play, and even by being beaten in one cannot bo put out of eecond place. Muhern A will, bar accidents, keep South Yarra A in fourth place. The final match to decide the ladies' premiership of Victoii.i was played off last Thur&day at St. Kilda. Tho competing clubs were Malvern and St. Kildu. and the former won an exciting match by one game. The Malvem representatives, who won the 1902 pendant for the club, and the season's shields for themselves, were Miss Collis, Miss Dilmolh, Mrs. Blackborne and Miss Forsyth. The interstate tournament between New South Wales and Queensland has resulted in the latter winning somewhat easily by 17 eels. Queensland had a lead of 16 sets when the Interstate Single* were completed, and after some splendid play j in the Interstate Doubles, especially by Rowlands and Fowles for Queensland, who won no le<-s than 8 sets to x l, Queensland scored 13 sets to 12. This is the first -lime that Queensland* has won the valuable cup piesented. for these contests some years since. Rowlands beat Fowles, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, in the Championship of Queensland and All-comer's Singles. Miss Mant ran away with the final for the Ladies' All-comers' Singles against Mips Naylor, the score being 6-3, j 6-2, but in the Ladies' Championship of Queensland Miss M. Mant beat her sister, the winner of the All-comers' Singles, j 6-3, 6-1. Rowlands and Fowles beat j Dewhurst and Burke in the New South j Wales Reps., 7-5, 64, 6-1, for tlie Allcomers' Doubles. No doubt many lovers of tennis ■will remember Miss Hilda Hitehings .and her sister, Belle, formerly of Napier. The former young lady is holding her own i at tennis in the Old pountry, having | lately -won the Open Singles at the an- | nual tournament held at Queeu's Club Gardens, London. She also won ,the Handicap Singles, with. ,a very heavy handicap against her. Miss Belle is now playing in "Are You a Mason," and is engaged For the remainder of the year. "Are You a Mason?" is a popular play now all the rage at Home. I am sorry to hear that Mr. Slonian, owing to pressure of private business, is not likely to continue as the lion, secretary of the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association. His place will be hard to fill, and if as earnest a worker can be brought out, the members of the Council' will have reason to* shako hands with one another. Have heard not a few of the Wednesday tennis players wondering why the match committees of clubs do not try to arrange somo club matches for them. They are quite in the right no doubt, but should put their shoulder to the wheel first by showing tholr match committee that there is sufficient members available and willing to play club matches on Wednesday afternoons.
