NOTES FROM DUNEDIN.
[BT TB-BQB-PH— PRESS ASSOOATIOK.] DUNEDIN, 22nd August Mr. James P.; Maitland, for many years Commissioner , of Crown Lands in utago, died this evening, after a prolonged illness. A case came before the Compensation Court, in whidh Mrs. M'Gintiis, a widow, claimed £100 compensation from the Minister of Mines for the pollution of the Fraser River, and £400 for prospective damage by declaring 1 the river a sludge channel. The Court awarded" £90 and as tlie amount was less than onehalf the claim each side was ordered to pnv its own costs. Frederick Lund and Edward Robinson, two troopers, who returned by the Orient, were charged to-day with stealitrg from a Crimean veteran a watch, moaals, and money. The prosecutor could not recognise the troopers, ond as the only evidence against Robinson was that he was waiting outside a pawn shop where Lund tried to dispose of the watch, tho cose against him was dismissed. Lund then pleaded Guilty to stealing tho watch, but denied taking tho other articles. Ho was remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence.
