OUR INDUSTRIAL SCHOOLS.
In December, 1901, the total number on the books of all the . industrial schools was 1765, or 62 more than at the close of the year 1900, and there were six Government industrial schools in existence. Marked benefits have, it is stated in the annual report of tho Education Department, already resulted from the system of classification that has gradually been introduced into the industrial schools, more especially during the last three years. The site for tho new boys' industrial school at Horowhenua has been cleared, and is now quite ready for the erection of the buildings required. Probably not less than 120 boys will be trained at the institution. At the end of 1901 there was in the Post Office Savings Bank branch an account of the earnings of Government - industrial schools a sum of £11,508, and on account of inmates of private industrial schools £1901. The Government expenditure on private industrial schools was as follows: — St. Mary's, Auckland, £1304 14s; St. Joseph's, Wellington, £267 15s 8d ; St. Mary's, Nelson, £1111 Is 8d ; St. Vincent de Paul's, Dunedin, £61 14s Bd.
