Mr. Hanan is asking the Minister for Justice if he will amend The Shorthand Reporters Act 1900, in the direction of providing that it shall apply to expert typewriters who may be employed under the provisions of the said Act to record evidence either by typoscript or shorthand as the Court may direct. In the course of some remarks derogatory to Chambers of Commerce, the Minister for Education said last night— "l never ktiew yet an occasion when Chambers of Commerce rose to the occasion. There was one occasion — but that was not in the pursuance of their ordinary affairs — when they did come up to scratch, and ' that was when they entertained the Premier at a dinner before he went away. Later, the Hons. G. M'Lean and A. Lee Smith strongly protested against the Minister's reference to these bodies.
Yesterday, for the first time this session, the Legislative Council sat at night. Out of some 42 members, 15 were in attendance. After the supper adjournment 12 members were in their seats in the chamber.
Astonishment was expressed by the Hon. A. Lee Smith yesterday at the. action of the Hon. G. 'Jones, who, he said, "posed as the high priest of democratic principles," in advocating additional power being given the Governor-in-Coun-cil to appoint members to the University Senate.
The welcome "social" to be given by the City Rifles to bergt. Hnlpin, which had to be postponed, will take place at the Foresters' Hull on Thursday next, 28lh inst. Miss Hawthorne's bond hae been engaged.
