The Syrian assault oases dragged on aJ- tho Supreme Court yesterday and this morning. The evidence of tho prosecutor (Sheweiry) and his witnesses, and of the five accused and their witnesses, 1 was "very contradictory. Tho prosecution alleged that owing to bad feeling arising out of a previous quarrel and struggle between prosecutors, Sheweiry and one Michaol David, tho accused — Mansoor Peter, Michael Qustin, Goo. Gustin, William Lahood, and Lnhood Buduie — allegedly instigated by David, set upon Sheweiry without provocation in the street near the Hotel Cecil' on tho ovoning of 28th May, beat him with sticks, and inflicted severe scalp wounds. The defence alleged that Mansoor Peter and Michael Gustin met Sheweiry, who, after a reference to hia struggle with JJavid, said he would " kill " them too, and struck Peter with a stick. Peter struck back, and threw Sheweiry several times, and Showoiry's ucalp wounds wore caused by contnet between his head and 'he road during this " rough-and-tumblo." Michael Gustin acted as peacemaker, and the other accused were not involved in tho fight. John Armstrong, labourer, and the only European witness of the assault, confirmed the accused's account of it. His Honour said it was for tho jury to say which side it believed.. The accused had tho additional 'advantage of having a confirmatory witness who was nqt Syrian. 'I he jury, after a retirement of two hours, returned with a verdict of Guilty ngahist nil tho accused.
