THE AUSTRALIANS' TOUR. MATCH GLOUCESTERSHIRE. PLAY STOPPED BY RAIN.[press association.] {Received August 19, 9.16 a.m.) LONDON, 18th August. The roturn match of the Australians against Gloucestershire was begun at Cheltenham to-day. Rain delayed the start, and the weather was dull and the wicket soft. There was a Bmall attendance. The home team was composed as follows: — Jessop, Champdin, Sewell, Rice, Troup, Brownlee, Board, Spry, Woof, Langaon, and Wrathall. The Australians omitted, were Trumble, Kelly, and Saunders. Darling won the toss, and sent in Duff and Trumper. When he had made a couple of runs Duff retired, caught by Woof off his own bowling. One for 6. Hill then joined Trumper. With the score at 21, rain again set in, preventing further play for the day. Scores: — AUSTRALIANS.— First Innings. At to-night's meeting of tne New Zealand Cricket Council a letter was rehd from Lord Hawke, saying that he had found great difficulty in getting a purely amuteur team, especially in regard to bowlers. He suggested that ho should be authorised to include two professionals at £100 each, besides expenses. Lord Hawke said ue proposed that there should bo thirteen pi avers in the team. He expected to get C. J. Buraup (Kent), T. L. Taylor (Yorkshire), N. F. Druce (Surrey), A. M. Miller (Wilt*), J. R. Head and H. R. Bromley - Davenport (Middlesex). Referring to / tho proposal from Major Wardill for the visit of an Australian team, Lord Hawke j said ho hoped it would ,be arranged, be- ! caiiße with such difficulties to meet Ms team might fall through. The Council resolved if Lord Hawke could not get ft purely amateur team ho should be authorised to engage two professionals or. the terms suggested. The Council resolved that it could not entertain the Suggested Australian visit.
