Already the City Council is receiving applications for some of tho surplus electrio power expected to be available when the electric trams are introduced. A proposal had been submitted to the Tramways Committees to light the railway station by electricity. Frank Halligan, an expressman, was committed for trial to-day for asaulting another expressman named Johnston. The defence sought to cet up provocation, but tho .Magistrate said he had nothing to do with that, as a prima facie case had been made out. Tho raid made by detectives yesterday on Chinese opium dens was made as the result of information that opium to tho value of £100 had been smuggteu into Otago. It is understood that the opium seized was not the snuggled article, which is believed to havo been taken to the goldflelds. ROAD RACLR STAR.
