With reference to tho eabio message dealing with tho extension of the Pacinc cablo to Honolulu, Sir Josoph Ward slated to-day that tho Cablo Board had consulted tho Government on the matter, and Ministers wero agreeable to the proposal, but required further information as to tho persons behind it, and they also .want an assurance that the connection of tho eablo with tho Unitod States will not havo tho effect of diverting any traffic from tho Pacific cablo proper. At a mooting of tho Council of tho New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, ■tho Chairman reported that the collection of subscriptions for tho Smith-Simpson .Fund progressed slowly. Tho Arbitration Court sat hero last ovenrng to hoar two cases under tho Workers' Compensation for Accidents Act. In the case S. G. Bunning' v. Jialmundscn judgment wns given for the claimant for £10 159 and coats. In the caso of W. H. Smith *v. J. Clark, a claim of £121 3s, judgment was reserved. In tho latter case it was argued for tho "defence that tho claimant was a partner in a contract, and that bushfclling did v not come within tho opcralion of tho Act.. TIMARU, This Day.
