In compliance with a strong protest from tho city members tho Minister for Railways has agreed to the temporary abandonment of tho contract system of cartage with the Railway Department ab Dunedin, and to permit a trial for six months of delivery by licensed carriers. Seventeen schools, representing 316 girls, participate in the cooking classes recently established by tho Lducation Board. The decision of Mr. Cruickshank, S.M., in January dismissing a charge of shooting native game brought against Robert Penman was yesterday appealed against. Mr. 1 Justice, Williams reserved his decision. Both tho Benevolent and Hospital Trustees have had to ask the Charitable Aid Board for additional votes this year, owing to tho cost of necessaries of life in every line having been increased. The City Council has decided, to entertain Mr. Denniston at a supper in the Town Hall on the close of his Mayoral term ft fortnight hence, and to make him a presentation. ' IST TELKOUAPfI. — PRR3S ASSOCIATION. 1 DUNEDIN, 17th April. The Drainage Board ha.s received a cablegram from Mr. C. Kussmaul, of Melbourne, who had bcon appointed Drainage Engineer, stating that owing to <ill-henlth ho was unable to accept the position. The Board met to-day to solect another applicant, but eventually deferred its decision till next meeting. Another caso of stealing paint from the Union Company was before the Police Court to-day, when John and Archibald Walker were again committed foi trial for stealing two tins of paint valued at £1 5s lOd. Three cases under the Dairy Industry Act came before the Police Court to-day, and as none were bad cases and the intention was to make tho terms of tho law more generally known, the defendants wero let off with a fine of five shillings and costs each. The first case was for not cleaning out a byre immediately before milking. Defendant cleaned it out morning and night, but not immocHately before milking in tho morning. Tho second dairyman was fined for not having his byre properly floored, and the third f w i'l". milling manure to remain within 50ft of v in ill: hoii'e and keeping swine within a- distance of 50 yards,
