Two natives of the Arawu tribe, Aperama and Ehure, line specimen!} of tho Maori race, have been chosen fioin tho Kotorua district to take part in the Coronation ceremonies with the Maori contingent. A sharp demand set in this morning for maize for export to Sydney, as high as 3s 4d being offered by buyers at this end. Tho Federal tariff, added to the cost of shipping, etc, will, mean that consumers in tho Commonwealth will be paying from 4s 9d to 5s per bushel for New Zealand maize. AUCKLAND, This Day. The gunboat Lizard has arrived from Wellington. Admiral Beaumont and the fleet officers will attend a ball at Government House on the 15th inst. The Squadron will probably leave Auckland on the following day. The Governor will remain in Auckland till the end of May. He will return to Wellington for the opening of Parliament. Constable Irwin, who was severely injured in a street row some days ago, is unable' to attend in Court to-day ; so John Duffy, charged with the assault upon him, has been further remanded. , GISBORNE, 6th April. The local branch of the Teachers' Institute has resolved that if the details boar out the oase as telegraphed, it will make a levy to assist the schoolmaster at Hikutaia who was fined this week for chastising a boy. CHRISTCHURCH, 6th April. At a meeting of the Christchurch Cycling Club, the principal event, tho Five-mile Championship of Canterbury, was won by W. Martin (America). G. Sutherland was second, and W. Palmer {Queensland) third. Martin won by a length in 12min 8 2-ssec. DUNEDIN, 6th April. The weather continues foggy and misty, retarding harvesting operations. ♦ WEBTPORT, 6th April. A half-mile rnco for £50 a-side between T. Shewlock, of Westport, and A. Gordon, late of Dunedin, was won easily by Shewlock at Waimangaroa on Saturday. NAPIKR, This Day. • Mr. W. Wood, headmaster of tho Napier Boys' High School, has just died here, aged 60. The deceased has been in charge of the school for fifteen years, during which time it has made great progress. He took a very active interest in volunteering, and was an honorary lieutcnant-colonol. Hib remains will ,ac-. cordiugly bo shown military honours. GISBORNE, This Day. Instructions have been received for the resumption of work on the railway with a limited number of men.
