DREADFUL ACCIDENT ON THE RAILWAY.
A TROLLY RUN DOWN. ONE MAN KILLED AND ANOTHER SERIOUSLY MANGLED. (BI TELKGBAPH PBE3S ASSOCIATION.} INVERCARGILL, This Day. < A shocking railway accident occurred last night near Morton Mains. On the arrival of a special train with mails at Edendale, the driver found entangled in the cowcatcher tho wheel of a railway tricycle. ) Parties searched the line in the vicinity of Morton Mains, with the result that Frank Thomas, an assistant ganger, was found dead and Lawrence Froser, ganger, terribly mutilated — so much so that his life is despaired of. In view of the passage of special and Ministerial trains some men had been ordered to inspect the road, and it appears that they were engaged in this duty when the accident occurred. It is said that they left home early for this purpose, and could have been back in time to avoid the risk. The night was clear, but there are some grades in the neighbourhood and it is supposed that the train came suddenly on them ton the crest of a rise.
