CRICKET. THE ENGLISHMEN IN AUSTRALIA.

j>BESS ASSOCIATION.') SYDNEY, 2nd December. Maclaren's team of cricketers is now playing a match against an eighteen at Glen Innes. The local team made 141 in its first innings. Bice 37 and Bond 24 were the chief scorers. The Englishmen have lost two wickets for 66 runs. Robson made 25 and Hayward, not out, 28. ' \ SOUTH AUSTRALIA v. NEW SOUTH WALES. SYDNEY, 2nd December. In the inter-State match between South Australia and New South Wales the latter's first innings closed for 438. Noble made 58, Gregory 30, Howell 44, C. Gregory 18, and Duff 30. Jones took four wickets for 121, and Travers three for 129. The South Australians in their fir»t innings have lost six wickets for 86 runs, Hill 50 and Reedman 14 were the chief scorers. THE LATE GEORGE LOHMANN. By the death of George Lohmann at the early age of 36 years and 6 months, the cricket world has lost one of the greatest players the game has ever produ^d. Jt(» was, perhaps, the best — certainly the most resourceful — fast bowler who ever represented England in the Test Matches. Men like Richardson, Mold, Morley, and Lockwood relied mainly on their pace to secure wickets, but Lohmann was not frightened of being sent to the boundary, and mixed his bowling with great judgment and skill. He started playing for' Surrey in 1884, and did more than any one else to raise that county to the top of the tree. Up to the time of his first illness, and while he was a member, the Surrey team won the County Championship six times. He was a fine, free batsman, -often making his best scores when runs were badly wanted by his' side, and as a fieldsman in the slips he has never had a superior. When Lohmann was first taken ill the Surrey Committee sent him to tho drier climate of South Africa, and also sent Maurice Read to accompany him. The change did much to improve Lohmann's health, and he returned to England, and once more took part in first-class cricket. In 1896 the match with Yorkshire was set apart for his benefit, and a big financial success was the result. Shortly afterwards he returned to South Africa, and since then cricket has seen little of him, although he accompanied as assistant manager, the South African team which toured England last season. Lohmann visited Australia with three English teams, and did good service to his side. He played in Wellington with the eleven of 1887-8. In Test Matches Lohmann captured 77 wickets for 1005 runs (average 13.05); and scored 204 runs for 20 completed innings, with a highest score, 62 not out, and an average of 10.20. George Lohmann was a most popular man off the field, and by his gentlemanly conduct did much to raise the status of professional cricketers. WELLINGTON v. CANTERBURY.
