OUR DEFENCE FORCES.

NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION. The New Zealand Rifle Association has now ceased to exist as such, the Government having taken over the control of the annual 'rifle meeting. Lieut. -Col. Sommerville and Lieut. -Col. Collins, who have managed the affairs of the association since 1885, ' have been requested by the Government to act upon the Executive Committee and carry out their respective duties as before, Colonel Sommerville being the Executive Officer, and Colonel Collins Treasurer and chief of the Statistical Department. Mr. F. W. Williams, of Napier, Major Brandon and Captain Turner, of Wellington, have been placed on the committee. The programme is now in hand and will be shortly published.- The time for the meeting will probably be the last week in February. The City Rifles held a competition for A, B, and C Class trophies at the Karori Range on Saturday ; conditions 500 and 600 yd s; seven shots ' at each range, C class competing at 500 yds only. The following are the highest scores: — A class — Private Jackson 57, Private Feasey 45. B class— Sergt. Woods 45, Corporal C. Guy 44. C class — Private Dalzeil 37. Private Jackson having headed the list for A class three times, the trophy now becomes his property. *The second-place men take ammunition prizes.
