PETITION FROM MERCHANTS AND SHIPPING COMPANIES. fcPBBSa AfISOOIATIONv} SYDNEY, 27th November Tfie representatives of 5? mercantile' firms and shipping companies in Sydney have forwarded a petition to the Tight Hon. C t Kingston, the Feder.al Minister "of Customs,' stating that they view with alarm the 1 , almost certain destruction of trade between Sydney, Fiji, and other Pacific islands if the Federal tariff is adopted. They ask that he shall "take into special consideration the trade of the Commonwealth with 1 the islands and place on the free list such, articles as copra, coconuts, bananas, peanuts, apples, bech-de-mer, vanilla, pearl shell, and turtle shell. The petition reminas' Mr. Kingston that recently whftn -A«W Zealand was' trying to bring about federation With Fiji, the Federal Government strongly protested' to the Secretary of State for the .Colonies against the r nlovement. It would, therefore, says the petition, appear to be inconsistent for the Federal Government id llow so 1 fax the products df Fiji that trade must tinddubtedly be forced to New Zealand, and thus lost to the Commonwealth.
