MELROSE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Melrose Borough Council was held last night, and was attended by all the members except Councillor Craw*ford. The Engineer reported that Apuka and Helen streets and Sugarloaf-road, township of Fitchett, had been formed and metalled to their full width. The surface of each street was in good condition. He estimated the cost of the removal of the banks hr Washington-avenue, Brooklyn, immediately north of the intersection with Qarffeld-street, at £50. Consideration of the question of removal of the Waahington-avenue banks was deferred until next meeting. The Streets Committee reported, with reference to Messrs. Brandon, Hislop and Johnston's application as to the proposed subdivision of land at Roseneath, that it had no recommendation to make, ac the proposed work would be in contravention of the Public Works Act, 1900. The report was adopted. 1 The Secretary of the Agricultural Department wrote that as the inspection of slaughterhouses was now vested in the Department the Council would have to cancel the appointment of its inspector. The Acting Town Clerk of "Wellington wrote that his Council was unable to see its way to come to an arrangement "as to the lighting of the various approaches to the borough. ' A deputation from the Melrose estate urged the importance of connecting the estate with Island Bay through the Town Belt. T^e Mayor (Mr. Frost) explained that plans had been prepared and that the Council was awaiting the decision of the City Council.
