LOCAL AND GENERAL. ♦ ' H.M.S. Lizard, which returned to the Australasian station lost month after serving in China during the recent trouble is due at Auckland from Sydney this week. She will visit this port later on. The cell accommodation at the Mount Cook Police Station is to be doubled. Both the new and the old cells will be heated in winter by means of warm air. Steps are being taken by the Dannevirke Borough Council to raise a loan of £6000 for a sewerage system for the central ' ward. The next sitting of the Bankruptcy Court will be held on Wednesday, sth February. The members of the Wellington Police Force have presented a marble clock to Detective Cameron on the eve of his marriage. The manner in which the late 'buses from the city to Karori tear through the main streets is becoming a source of considerable danger to the public, and unless some control is exercised there will be somebody maimed or killed. Last night two of them went along Lambton-quay almost at a hand gallop. The Agricultural Department's chemist, Mr Aston, states that the results obtained in fertiliser analyses show the necessity of protecting the farmers by a vigorous enforcement of the Manures Adulteration Act, or of some more workable measure which should supersede it. It would be interesting, to see a systematic examination made of all the fertilisers on the market within the colony. All the butchers' and pork butchers' shops in the city -will be dosed tomorrow on account of the annual picnic of the trade, which will be held at Days' Bay. Arrangements have been made for a copious programme of amusements at the Bay. The ferry steamers' time-table is outlined in another column. Although the Gothic does not leave the colony on her next trip to London until the middle of March, many intending passengers have already taken out tickets.
