DOWIE'S WEALTH.
— ■ ♦ John Alexander Dowie, alias Elijah 11., and the "Modern Prophet ofZion," who ten years or less ago (says an exchange) could hardly boast a red c»nt's worth of real property, has just been assessed by the 'Frisco taxing authorities on personal property worth half a million dollars. He is the owner of seven tabernacles, five houses of "divine healing," a printing and publishing plant, and several flourishing business concerns known as the Zion City Land ' Association, Zion City Lumber Company, and others. As a man who began as a prophet and lall-round "medicine-man" less than a decade ago, and now has between two and three million dollars' worth of property in his name, Dowie is one of the piquant personalities of the period. Well, the labourer is worthy of his hire, and doubtless Dowie thinks the prophet is worthy of his profits. But 'tis evident from Dowio's success in life that Carlyle's dictum regarding the population of Britain is tolerably universal in its application.
