SPORTING. WELLINGTON RACING CLUB.
The newly-elected Stewards of the Wellington Racing Club held their first meeting last night, Mr. Scales being the only absentee. Mr. J. Duncan (President) was in the chair. Twelve new members were added to the club's roll. A sub-committee was appointed to confer with Sir George Clifford (Chairman of the C.J.C.) and the' club's solicitor (Mr. H. D\ Bell) in reference to the proposed appeal to the Privy Council as to the right to expel bookmakers from public reserves used as racecourses. J. Farmer, who has been an inmate of the Hospital, for some time suffering from atn injury to the foot caused through Ostiak's younger brother falling on Mm at the Hutt, was vot«d £14 from the Distressed Jockeys' Fund ; and W. Murphy, who ■ was injured while exercising the Sybil filly at the Hutt, w*as granted 2 guineas. The dates of the Summer Meeting were fixed for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 20th, 22nd, and 24th January, 1902. It was , decided to abolish the system ,of re-handicapping winners after the declaration of weights for the Wellington Cup, and provide stipulated penalties. The : purchaser of Kobuhui applied for removal of the disqualification from the horse, but the, request was not acceded to. ; The following appointments were made ' for the season : — Clerk of Scales, Mr. J. Wil- ■ kins ; Timekeeper, Mr. N. Grace ; Hon. Sffrgeon, Dr. J.* R. Purdy. Committees were appointed as follows: — Course and Buildings, Messrs. Ames, Mowbray, Turnbull, and Wilkins ; Finance and Privileges, Hoe. C. J. Johnston, Messrs. Harcourt, Moorhouse, and Skerrett; Jockeys' and Trainers' Licenses, Messrs. Abbott, Ames, and Baldwin; Programme, Messrs., Scales, Baldwin, and Abbott. A sub-committee was appointed to confer with .representatives of the Hutt Park Railway Company, Ltd., with a view fo obtaining direct communication with the course. It was decided that Mr. ■Q. H. Scales had been appointed honorary judge for the year, the ruling of the chairman at the annual meeting being thus upheld. The programme of the Wairacapa Jockey Club (Ist and 2nd January), the Lower Valley Jockey Club (26bh and 27th December)) and the >Whakataki Racing Club (15th February, 1902— no totalisator)j were submitted for approval, and referred to the Programme Committee. Licenses were granted as follows :— Trainer, J. A. Farmer; Jockeys, J. H. Hercock, F. Beale, N. Williams, H. Higgott, W.
