CRICKET.

Of the twelve teams which competed for the third-class cricket championship last season, three have withdrawn from the contest, and there is only one new team entered for it this year. Five junior teams, as against seven last season, will compete for second-class honours, .and four teams will fight 1 out the senior championship. For the first time for some years No. 4 wicket on the Basin Reserve will be at the disposal of the third-class committee, as No. 3 wicket on the Reserve and the pitch on the College ground are all that are required for the junior championship. In addition two pitches are provided on the College ground for third-class matches, and two will probably be arranged for on the Athletic Park. The employees of the Wellington Gas Company have decided to form a cricket club, and will apply for leave to play in the junior contest. The office-bearers are i — President, Mr. D. Nathan ; Vice-Presi- ! dents, Rev. C. S. Ogg, Messrs. Ander- | son, Barry, Pierce, Birch, and Howell ; Practice Captain, Mr. F. Lingard ; Hod. Secretary, Mr. F. H. Smyth ; Hon. Treasurer, Mr. C. H. Barrett; Management Committee, Messrs. Cook, Mann, Johnston, North, and Dowling ; Match Committee, Messrs. Topp, Gamble, and Clark. A pitch has been put down in the Tory-street yard, where constant practice has been engaged in for the past month. The club includes several former senior and junior players, and should hftva a briaht career. .
