CITY COUNCIL.
The regular meeting of the City Council was held last evening. Present— The Mayor (Mr. J. G. W. Aitken), Councillors Evans, Godber, Smith, Murdoch, Nathan, Winder, Luke, Tolhurst, Devine, and Izard. The return of finances for the month of September showed the receipts to have been £6589 Is Id, and the expenditure £6067 12s 6d. The credit balances at the Bank as at 30th September were: — Cify Improvement Loan Account, £646 Is sd ; District Fund Account, £10,269 15s 7d; Street Loan Account, £3804 8s 6d; Street-widening Loan Account, £3914 7s 3d ; Deposit Account No. 1, £2000 ; Deposit Account No. 2, £3000. The Works Committee recommended — 1. That the Melrose Borough Council be called upon to abatei the nuisance caused through their forming a track and zig-zag at Grass-street, thus causing the surface water to run across the street and into the adjacent property. 2. That the Hospital Trustees be informed that the water course running into the property recently acquired by them at Revans-street, is a natural one, and that the responsibility of clearing same rests with them as owners of the property. 3. That the two water mains in Arostreet be connected, at an estimated cost 4>i £20. 4. That the application of Mr. W. 0. Beere for a water main at c*ertain rights-of-way off Epuni-street be granted on the usual conditions. The report was adoptedIt was recommended by the Legislation Committee that the application of Messrs Irvine and Stevenson for a new lease, of sections 145 and 157, Lambton Reclaimed Land, at a rental, of £189 per annum, be granted. ' The comiffittee reported that it had further considered the matter reported on by it at last meeting of the Council, and referred back for reconsideration, and it now recommended that a reply be forwarded to the Mayor of Invercargill that the Council was in sympathy with the resolution passed by his Council on the subject of the desirability of local bodies being able' to obtain money with the assistance of the Government at a low rate of interest ; but that the matter appeared to be one that should be taken up by the Municipal Association ; and, further, that the Mayor of Invercargill be asked to bring the matter before the- Association. The report was adopted. Accounts amounting to £2847 10s 5d were passed for payment. Having dealt with other ' matters as reported on in another column, the Council adjourned.
