THE WAIKARE-MOAN AROAD
The writings of My. Elsdon Best and others have of late yfears helped to draw popular attention to the Tuhoe country in general and to Waikare-moana in particular. The scenic beauties of the country, its altitude and fine climate, and the successful experiments in stocking the lakes and rivers with trout, have opened | great promise that Waikare-moana, once rendered accessible, w4ll bo a tourist resort second only to Rotorua. In accord with this policy the extension, of the road from Wairoa to the lake was put in hand, with the object of affording access from Napier and Gisborne ; and this was but the first half of a- scheme to carry a coach road right through to Rotorua. According to a Northern exchange, there is now only three miles of roadwidening to be completed in order to comv plete the road for wheel traffic from the 1 Wairoa side to Waikare-moana; -while fourteen mil^s on the other side will complete through communication between Rotorua and Waikare-moana. At this stage, the paper learns, the Government has decided to reduce the labour on the co-operative works on the road. At the same time, it' is understoqd that the erection of the 'sanatorium at the lake has put ia hand. In view of these apparently conflicting! circumstances, an Evening Bbst reporter made enquiries in ajeliablo quarter/ and was assured that it "is "utter nonsense to spend thousands op a tourist road when there are hundreds of settlers, whom the Government put on the road, now up to their chim in mud." TLa informant added that if the sanatorium at Wai-kare-moana was erected, then the road would be completed to it, bub the construction of the road through to Rotorua would have to be postponed. For the present the work on the Wairoa to WaiN kare-moana'section was being tapered off, and the intentioia was to let no more cooperative contracts on the expiry of the existing ones.
