Sir James Prondergast left on Saturday last by tho Orient iteamor Ormuz for Sydney on his way back to New Zealand. Except for tho time which was occupied by the sitting of the secret conference with reference to tbo jn'oposed Imperial Court of Appeal, Sir James's stay in England bus been spent chiefly in travelling about the country visiting friends aud relatives. Tho betrothal is announced of Miss Alice Roae, second daughter of Captain and Mm. Rose, of Wellington, to Mr. C. V. Houghton, manager at Auckland of the New Zealand Slapping Company . with which his fiancee's father was so long and honourably connected. Ab this week's meeting of the Colchester Town Council a bill for £100, part of the expenses incurred in sending officers to New Zealand to bring home Charles Lillywhito, tho man who was thought to be Arthur Blutch, was presented to the Council for approval. The Mayor said this wus for the maintenance of tho officers in New Zealand and for their return tickets. Tho P. and O. Company, which had declined to bring them back with their "capture," the innocent man Lillywhite, had paid tho Corporation £50 in settlement of a claim. It transpired that the bill for this chase amounts to £400. Recent callers at the Agency-Gcnqral include Mr. F. J. Towiihond, of Dunodin; Lieut. Guy Powlos, of the Fourth New Zealand Contingent ; Mr. J.. E. P. Allen, of Dunedin ; tho Rev. Joseph Berry; Sergeant B. L. Hodgson, of the Third New Zealand Rough Riders, Invercargill; Mrs. G. Nelson ; and Mr. Ralph T. Rayner, of Westland. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Blundell nnd Miss Blundell write to me that they have had an extremely pleasant tour of the English and Scottish Lakes, the Caledonian Canal, and Scotland generally. On the whole they havo had fine weather, excepting, once or twice, a little more Scotch mist than tliey cared to experience even in the land of its name's origin. They travelled from Edinburgh to Liverpool yesterday, and will remain in that neighbourhood until Monday, when they cross over to Ireland, intending to stay for some days at the Hotel Metropole, Dublin. The seventeenth annual match play tournament for tho silver cup presented by the Calcutta Golf Club to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club in 1885 was begun on Tuesday last, on tho new course at St. Andrew's. Sixty-fivo entries wore received, among them being Mr. Spencer Gollaw, winner in 1900. Mr. Spencer H. Gollan was beaten in tho second round by W. E. Fairlie (scratch) by 6 and 4. THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL. I need hardly say that the last San Francisco mail was several days late as usual. It is not surprising that there should bo much annoyance at the extreme inconvenience caused by the irregularity of tho new service. I am simply bombarded with furious complaints and savage grumblings. Pooplo write to me violeutly abusing tho service and the Government for tolerating "it, or they call at tho office and declaim with such impassioned vehemence that I am in dread of v crowd collecting under tho impression that a "row" is "on." I can only^ accord to tho victims my sincoro sympathy, nnd remind them that I am as severe a sufferer ns they. But this does not seem to soothe them much.
