Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather every seat ut the Theatre Royal was occupied last night, and all the items on the extensive programme went off in fine style. Miss Irene Franklin and ! Messrs. Pope and Suyles were recalled time after time, and the rest of the company were woll received. Another big house greeted the Empire Vaudeville Company last night. Mr. Will Stevens is still the chief attraction at the hall, and he is ably backed up by Misses Ivy Fulton, Maud Faniug, Faust and Walhalla, and Ted Herberte. Two new artists are announced for to-morrow night. X'he entertainment given at the Federal Theatre by Lex Maclean and company is being well patronised by the public. There was another good house last night. It is understood that the Pollard Juvenile Opera Company, which had booked to open a season at the Opera House next week, has forfeited its dates in this colony, and is going on to America. I - The Pollard Opera Company will begin its next New Zealand tour at Dunedin on 3rd August, opening in "Floradora," which has had such a fine run under Mr. J. 0. Williamson's management in Australia. "Tho Casino Girl," ' now being played in Sydney by the Williamson Company, will also be in the bill. The Wellington. City Brass Band intends playing in the Basin Reserve on Sunday for the benefit of one of its members who has been unable to work for B.omo months past. The Wesleyan Literary and Debating Society held its usual meeting lost evening, the Rev. W. C. Oliver in the chair. An interesting paper on "The Merchant of Venice" was read by Mr. R. H. Wedde, nnd the "Trial Scene" was well rendered by the following members : — Portia, Miss M'Lean ; Nerisßa, Miss E. Arnold; Shylock, Mr. J." W. Black; Antonio, Mr. Lucas ; Bassanio, Mr. Muston ; the Judge, Mr. Williams ; Gratiano, Mr. J. W. tJarr. Next Thursday Mr. T- W. Rowe will deliver a lecture on ''English Literature of the Nineteenth Century." A large attendance is assured for the social to be held at the Foresters' Hall this evening in connection with the Clyde-quay branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation. The feature of the proceedings will bo the presentation to tjhe Postmaster-General to mark his elevation to knighthood. The Premier and Mrs. Seddon, Lady Ward, and tlio Hon. J. Carroll will be present.
