DISCONTENTED VOLUNTEERS TO THE EDITOR.
Sir — Now that the Royal party hav6 left our port, I think it is in the interests of humanity that the powers that rule should be called upon to explain for the gross cruelty that has taken place at Newtown Park this week, not only to animals, but to human beings. If a business man neglects to feed his horse he is fined for the offence, and rightly so; but it would appear that volunteers and their horses are exempt. If those responsible had not heard of the shocking state of affairs before the "skeleton march" took place on Wednesday they must have been either out of town or else so much interested in their enjoyment as to' forget their duty. This protest, however, had no effect, hence the bold parade on Wednesday. When we th|nk that one of the chief attractions of "the week has been the 4 fine army of. men, wearing the King's uniform, and then knotf'the disgraceful way they have been treated, it is needless to say it will do great harm to the volunteer cause, EvenHhe'Masterton School cadets, who had never been to sea before, were taken straight from the train to the steamer to Lyttelton like cattle without even having a meal y in town. I know how they would feel when they got ouside the Heads.— -I am, etc., WADESTOWN. Wellington, 21st June, 1901-
