CITY COUNCIL.
1 The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held last night. There were present—The Mayor (Mr. Aitken), Councillors Luke, Winder, Tolhurst, Murdoch, Evans, Godber, Nathan, M'Laren, and Lsard. . ' Leave of absence was granted to Councillors Hmith, Barber, and Devine. A letter from residents in Mem-street urging that something should be done to the footpaths was referred to the Works Committee. .. . . . c j/.Fhe Council decided to take no action in .reference to- a request, by a number of cab-lMversf thai) -the case of M. O'Shea, whose license 1 has "been cancelled, should be "reconsidered. •■' ' The 'following recommendations of' the Works' Oommitteo" were adopted: — 1. That consent be granted to a iright-of-Way 4ft 4in wide at Macdonald-crescent, as applied for 1 by Sir Kenneth Douglas, on condition ' that it' be ' n6t ' used as a building frontage, such condition to be registered against the title." 2. That the pla,ns submitted 'by Messrs. Skerrett and Wylie of their proposed new building at Lambton-quay be. approved, subject to the ,4iin wall being properly bonded into the existing wall, and to the joists being laid in such existing wall to a depth of 4^in, all to the satisfaction of the ,City, Enginqer. It w.as recommended by the legislation Committee that a surrender .of Messrs. Meadows and Routh's lefose of seqtion No. 110, Johnston-street, be accepted;,, sand <a" new lease gran-ted to them under the Wellington City Leasing Act, 1900; at nn annual rental of £77; and that there- be a condition in such lease that the lessors,, within , three months commence to build, and within nine months completely construct a building on the, said, .section of, a,, value of not less than £3/7.5,0. Councillor Izard moved an addition to the report to the effect that the lease • must be taken up within 21days from Ist July next. This was agreed to, and the report as amended was adopted.
