[By Nei>tune.] I learn from the Yachting World that "in planning the spar Mr. Watson has departed altogether from the usual method I of fitting a topmast over a mainmast*
and has taken * bold step in fitting the challenger with a pole-mast. Needless, to say the spar will be the largest ever stepped in a vessel of a,ny kind, and from the step to the truck it will tape no less than 148 ft. This will bo made throughout of thin plates of nickel steel, rolled to semi-circular shape, riveted on both edges, and strengthened inside by a large number of steel spurs, extending from side to side of the spar." On the other hand, the Yachtsman informs its readers that tho challenger (t is fitted with p, telepcopio topmast, like that of tho American rival, so much admired last year. All the rigging is made of the strongest steel wire, and the shrouds are led through powerful galvanised steel spreaders. The framework is of nickel steel, and the deck aluminium, covered with yellow pine. The only spar on board (at the time of launching) was the bowsprit, but the sparenoss of its rigging — a Taobstay and pair of shrouds in single parts — conveys an impression of lightness."
