[Sir Edward, who was formerly a "Manchester merchant, sat in two Parliaments for Yarmouth and Stockport, and represented Hythe continuously from 1874 to 1895. He promoted arid carried out'several important railway systems, and was the originator of a scheme' for a tunnel under tho English Channel, which was iactUally bCjgUn, but abandoned in. consequence of objections by the military authorities, ne was created a baronet in 1880, and was also a Knight of various foreign Orders.]
