In an article on the question of the sale to the Government of the WellingtonManawatu Railway, the Christchurch Press says :— "We do not think the offer made by the directors was at all an unreasonable one.' The shareholders made the railway at a time of great depression, when it Mas generally prophesied that it would never pay. For the first three years they received no dividend at all ; iu-,1891' they received 3£.per, cent.,, and unco then, (including the present distribution) they have . received' five dividends of 5 per cent, .'and five oi> 6 per. cent. 'iliey unowed groat pluck in constructing the railway in tho«iii\>t instance; thdjr saw to its being well made, and they have carefully nursed it into a position of pros perky. In these circumstances we do not . think it , at all unreasonable that they yhouxl receive an equivalent of 6 patent, on their money throughout. At the t.amo time, we realise that the Government have a duty to discharge to the tAxpayerd, and if fche-pfTer of the directors Is less favourable to the colony than the l«« ins prescribed by the Act oi 1881 then I hoy ought to proceed under tho' latter. \ / hat wo do think, however, would be uttinctly unfair and improper would be ior iho Government to attempt to coerce oi* jockey the company into selling* on \ ouo terms tbrfn those which it is eniilk'd to under the Act. The Government, by means of cu.t-throat rates on their own lines, have already tried to bring the company to their terms. We •ay they have no right to deal in this wa,y with a body • of colonists and others who have performed a great public service to New Zealand by tho construction of the lino." C.
