Surgeon-Captain Gabites (of Timaru) arrived in camp yesterday. Corporal Butler, of the Permanent Artillery, has been attached to the Contingent as Left Wing Quartermaster-Ser-geant. Captain Johnston has been appointed Adjutant of the Contingent, and Captain Coutts (of . Queen's scarf fame) Quartermaster. Tiie lines were cleared of horses this morning. All the horses lately used by .the Contingent have been taken out
te run on the grounds of the Trentham rifle ranges. Active preparation for embarkation is going on in camp. No drill was done yesterday or to-day. Seygeant J. Calnan was entertained by the Melrose Football Club last night, and Sergeant Robinson and Privates Fordham and Fitzgerald by St. Peter's Club. Keepsakes were presented to each man. ' The Mahino (Oamaru) friends of Trooper J. M'Lonnan sent him up £7 with which to purchase a pair of binoculars as a mark of his admirers' esteem. Mr. W. M. Miller (son of the Inspector of Stock in Hawkes Bay) was presented to-day with a watch and wrist-strap by his fellow officers in the Agricultural Department, on leaving to join the Contingent: ARRIVAL OF THE TRANSPORT. The troopship Gulf of Taranro, which is to carry the contingent to South Africa arrived from Sydney at 1.40 this morning. She is, of course, at present in quarantine, and will not be berthed until this evening or early to-morrow morning. THE EMBARKATION. It is now definitely announced that the contingent will embark on Saturday. The Mayor elsewhere notifies that the Contingent will leave the Park at half-past 2 o'clock, march ; to the Band Rotunda- at Jervois-quay by way of Vivian-street and Cuba-street, and on arrival at'the Rotunda they will be addressed by the Governor, the Premier, and the Mayor, afterwards embarking. The general public are invited to assemble on the line oi inarch and make the send-off as hearty as possible. The Patriotic Committee^ met this morning, the Mayor of Wellington presiding, and granted financial help to two returned troopers.
