The annual statutoiy meeting of the Wellington District Hospital Board was held this morning. Present — Messrs. Evans {in the chair), Townsend, and Murdoch (representing tlie City Council), Messrs. A. A. Samp.c (Wellington Hospital Trustee), and James Walker (llutt County, Council). The following estimates for the year 1901-2 were passed, subject to a verification of the lequisition by the Chahman and Mr. Townsend: — Required by Hospital Trustees, £12,560 ; contingencies, £100; Otaki Cottage Hospital, £1045;' total, £13,705. Amount of assets over liabilities, £1081 3s 9d. Half of the sum required (£12,620 16s 3d) is payable by -local bodies, and half by the Government. Anderson (who was le-elected Chairman), Tolhurst, M'Gill, and Winder (of the City Council), Mi. A. A. Sample (Hospital Trustee), and Mr. A. W. Hogg, M.H.R. (representing Wairarapa). The Coroner held an inquest to-day at Mount View Asylum on the body of Albeit Ge6rge Harris, formerly a waiter, aged 45 yems. Deceased was admitted to the Asylum in February, 1900, and of late developed an acute form of mania, throwing himself about a great deal ;. and though most of his time in a padded room, he managed to break several of his ribs. The doctor discovered this only two or three days afterwards. The patient had been treated for abscess. This raised his temperature and obscured other symptoms, which at lengtlf ended in empyemia or suppurative pleurisy. This Mas the cause of death, and a verdict was found accordingly. The most careful enquiry by Dr. Gow and the jury failed to disclose any violence on the part of attendants, and the man himself in sane intervals never complained, and leadily submitted to the attendants till their backs were turned. St. Clair Jourax pleaded guilty at the Magistrate's Court to-day to seiling, at Lower Hutt on lSth. Maich. underweight 4-lb loaves. Sub-Inspector Wilson stated that of the several loa-ves weighed by the Inspector, none M r as less than 6oz short, and one was half a pound short. Mr. Wiifcrd emphasized the difficulties in the way of evaporation which bakers have to contend with, and the Bench (Messrs. M'Lean, M'ArcLc, and Tustin) agreed to treat the case as lightly as possible, imposing the lowest penalty provided by the Act, a fine of 20s, with 7s costs. A similar charge against the driver was withdrawn. The Inspector of Nuisances (Mr. James Doyle) brought a number of prosecutions under the by-laws at the Magistrate's Couit this morning. Pon Lee, Jun Lee, Sing Lee, Hop Lee, and Wong Lee, all defended by Mr. Cooper, were each fined ss, with 7.s costs, for 'using water for trade purposes without putting in a meter. The omission has since been lepaired. A similar case again&t Ah Slecs. was withdrawn, and Hing Lee, on the same charge, was fined 5s and 7s 6d costs, and was ordered to discontinue using the water till a meter is supplied. John Aitken, driver of a licensed vehicle, was fined Is, with costs 7s, for charging a higher fare than was allowed by the by-law. James Fe'lingham and James Murphy were each fined' Is, with costs 7s, for failing to register dogs. At the same sitting, John Dome was fitted 10s 6d for assaulting Charles Davis at Wellington on 18th March. During the course of business at the fruit maiket this morning Mr. F. Townsend asked the Chinamen present for Bubscriptions towards the Queen's Statue Fund. There was an immediate and libeidl response, the sums given totalling £28. The only other addition to the Statue Fund this morning was that of £2 2s from Messis. Townsend and Paul. The fund now has a total of £1407 13s 4d. At an eaily hour this morning a heavy slip, bringing down some thousands of yards of earth, occurred at the Corporation quarry above Pirie-slreet. The slip also carried away pail ol the road above.
