A STORY OF LORD LANSDOWNE
The London correspondent of the Manchester Guardian tells an amusing story of Lord Lansdowne. While GovernorGeneral of Canada he was, after one of his tours, entertained at dinner by the citizens of a well-known Dominion town. In lespouding to the toast of his health he descanted at some length upon the wonders he had seen in the course of his travels. The speech was well received, and he was gratified on resuming his seat to hear loud and long-continued applause. He had a painful disillusionment, however, after the entertainment was over. "You see," said a candid friend, "when one of your predecessors was here some years ago he delivered an oration which lasted just three hours ; so we were surprised and delighted when you sat down after speaking only forty minutes." No wonder, adds the correspondent, that ever since the new Foreign Secretary has lost no opportunity of cultivating a tersa and pointed oratorical ! civic
