GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS

The first annual sports meeting of the Wellington, Girls' High School avus held yesterday afternoon on the .lawn of the school grounds, before a lnvge gathering of spectators, the guests of the school. The first events were a series of lenuis, croquet, and putting contests, which were won respectively by the following : — Tennis Championship — B. yon Dadclszen. Tennis Doubles — D. Hannay and J. Vnn Staveren. Senior Croquet — E. Allport. Junior Croquet — D. Alexander. Sports' Championship — A. Kennedy, 1 ; F. Hannay,. 2. Putting Competition (visitors) — Miss Dransfield and Mr. Bennett; Miss Brandon and Dr. M'Lean. After these more conventional battles had been fought and won, the visitors witnessed contents in" those nioje arduous branches of athletics that generally claim as their devotees members of the sterner sex, but on this 1 occasion were indulged in by fair damsels attired in a variety of costumes which, though perhaps more suited for street wear, than for, such vigorous exertions, still lent' a "piquancy to the scene that was refreshingly novel. Three-legged Race (two heats) —A. Kennedy, i ; M. Wheeler, 2. This contest caused considerable amusement. Combined Bicycle Race (two heats) — M. Williams and E. Naughton, 1 ; Z. Nation and G. Lennox, 2. The competitors had to ride down the field in pairs, holding hands, to a row of blackboards, on sjvhjch they mxist write the word " Hurrah," and then ride home. A most exciting event. Senior Foot Race, 100 yds (two heats)— G. Lennox, 1 ; D. Wilson, 2. Bicycle Obstacle Race — Z. Nation and B. Fitzgerald tied, each steering .past a series of iiower-pots filled wis potatoes, between which they passed without touching. The successful competitors were loudly applauded. The next event was a Walking Race, in which each competitor had to balance a. book on her head. Should she drop the volume she was out of the race. Three heats were run, the first of which broke down, as every competitor lost her book before she got half-way to the winning post. The final was won by B. Wilson, with A. Kennedy and A. Pederson a dead heat for second place. Egg and Spoon Race (three heats) — A. Pedersen, 1 • E. Simcox, 2. All heats very close. Bicycle Tortoise (two heats) — G. Lennox, 1; B. Fitzgerald, 2. The contest, which was won by the- girl who got to the winning post last, again called forth considerable skill, . and was well contested. Hopping Race (two heats) — A. Pedersen, 1; F. Hannay, 2. Sack Race (two heats)— A. Kennedy, 1; F.. Hannay, 2. Bicycle Egg' and Spoon (two heats)— Z. Nation, lj G. Lennox, 2. Foot Race, 100 yds, - junior —M. Berkeley, 1; F. Hannay, 2. Blindfold Walking (two heats)— l, Curtis, 1,; A. Kennedy, 2; Skipping Race (two heats) —I. Curtis, 1 ; J. Wiggins, 2. Potato Race (two heats)— W. Thompson, 1; E. Simcox, 2. Old Girls 1 Egg and Spoon Race— H. yon Dadelszen, 1; G. MorraTi, 2. Old Girls' Bicycle Race— M. Hales, 1. Consolation Race— -B. Fitzgerald, 1; T. yon Dadelszen, 2. The championship was won by A. Kennedy, with 12 points, F. Hannay being second, with 10 points. At the conclusion of the sports prizes were distributed by Mr. A. de B. Brandon, as well as the following won at the swimming sports in February last: — Championship — T. yon Dadelszen, 1 ; G. Gibbs and B. yon Dadelszen, 2. Fourteen and under — A. Berkeley, 1 ; B. FitzGerald, 2. Back Swimming — B. yon Dadelszen, 1. Over fourteen — T. yon Dadelszen, 1 ; K. Marchant, 2. Footfirst Plunge— B. FitzGerald and G. Gibbs, 1. 30 yds Handicap — D. Gillon, 1 ; A. Berkeley, 2. Headers— W. Hannay, 1. Race in walking costume — D. Wilson, 1. Afternoon tea was provided for tho visitors, and music was provided by Jupp's Band.
