HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of , the Hutt j County Council was held this morning, j Present— Councillors J. Wakeham (Chairman), C. W. Brown, J. Walker, G. Brown, R. Bould, and H. Cook. The report of the Inspector of Works • (Mr. J. Golder) stated that the storm which occurred on the 17th and 18th ult. was severely felt along the -whole length of the eastern side of the county from Lower Wainuiomata to the top of the Rimutaka. The Council's employees have been busily employed making good the damage and repairing the Silverstream bridge. Part of the Lower Wainuiomata road was washed away. In Whiteman's Va.ley one small bridge was washed out, five slips came down on the new road, a number of culverts were blocked up, and other damage was done. On the Rimutaka road there* were twelve slips, amd the outside of the road' was washed away in four places. The Pakuratahi river cut behind two of the groins of the bridge, and is thus getting nearer to the road at the southern end of the bridge. The course of the riyer is changing higher up, and has a tendency to turn into its old course. The bridge will have to be repaired. The .bridge on the Eastern road at Stokes Valley also requires repairing, as at present it is not fit to carry heavy traffic. The decking of the long bridge at SLvers^ream requires attention, and another bridge, a mile below Johnsonville, requires attention. The erant-ri-aid (£950) voted last year for the Aka-" tarawa-Waikanae road had been expended, and the Government Inspector had expressed himself well pleased with the Work done. The recommendations of the Inspector were adopted, and he was instructed to see to the carrying out of the necessary work. He was instructed to accept the tender of Messrs. Ahem and Power for the completion of the Paikakariki-Para-pnraumu road (56 chains) as soon as the ipnt-in-aid is available ; also to arrange , for a bridge site at Rikiorangi and a site for a pound at Paraparaumu. .Councillor Morrison wrote asking for leave of absence during his visit to England. The Councillor set forth in great detail the works required in his 'riding (Whareroa), and expressed the hope that his district's wants would be attended to durwg his absence. Six months' leave of absence was granted. Mr. W. Pringle's offer to supply dog collars for the ensuing year wns accepted, as also was Messrs. J. Swan arid Co.'s Offer to supply clog collar labels. A request from the Health Officer (Dr. Purdy) that medical practitioners in the county should report all cases of epidemics, etc., direct to him, was ordered to be complied with. A parcel of pamphlets was received from the Auckland Cycle Road League treating of i-oad-repairing and maintenance. The Clerk said the pamphlets were well worth perusal by Councillors. The tender of T. and W. Dalzell was accepted for making the outfall drain on the Paikakaviki-Paraparaumu road. As the only tender sent in was too high the Council resolved to form a portion of the Paikakariki-Paraparaumu road near the properties of Messrs. Mackay Bros, and F. Smith as far as an expenditure of £100 will permit. It was decided to inform sawmillers in the county who use the roads for heavy traffic that they must obtain their licenses within a 'fortnight after receiving notice of the regulation on the subject. The question of suing for rates on native lands was left to Councillor G. Brown who is to interview the Native Minister on the subject. The Council decided that the dog tax should not be collected from owners who produce a certificate from the Stock Department that the animals are required for exterminating rabbits. The tax for all other dog 3 wilj be the same as last year.
