A BRITISH GENERAL KILLED.
LONDON, 10th November. Lord Roberts reports to the War Office that Major-General Lo Gallais, commanding one of the British columns, was killed in the engagement with General De Wet's commando near Bothaville. Lord Roberts deeply regrets the death of the General, who was a most gallant and capable cavalry leader. [Major-General Lo Gallais went out to Africa as Lieut. -Colonel of the Eighth Hussars, and has for some time been in command of a brigade, in which capacity he has rendered excellent service. Prior to this 'campaign he won honours in Egypt. For the Nile expedition of 1897 he received the medal with clasp. In the final advance to Khartoum he took part as major in the cavalry reconnaissance of 4th April, 1898, and the battles of Atbara and Khartoum, was twice mentioned in despatches, received his \brevet of lieut. -colonelcy, the fourth-class order of Osmanieh, and two clasps.]
